Penn junior Alex Fritz could not have helped his team much more yesterday than he did. The Austrian native won all three matches in which he played, leading Penn to consecutive victories over St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's yesterday at the Levy Tennis Pavilion. Penn improved to 5-2 on the season, while simultaneously ending a two-match losing streak with yesterday's pair of wins. In the opener, the Quakers edged the Bonnies (6-6) 4-3 as the doubles point proved to be the deciding factor. "We were really stressing the doubles this week," Penn assistant coach Joel Berman said. "They came out and they started moving better and they put themselves in better position to win the point, and I thought that was the key to the match." The Quakers swept all three doubles' matches to garner the all-important point. Senior Ryan Harwood and sophomore Anthony Pu downed the Bonnies' pair of Mario Arce and Vili Nurmi, 8-2. Sophomores Todd Lecher and Craig Rubin beat Mikko Haulos and Nikhil Murali 8-6. Freshman Jimmy Fairbanks and sophomore David Lynn outplayed Adam Price and Sajeel Qureshi, 8-1. Singles' play proved to be a draw with both the Quakers and the Bonnies winning three matches. First-seeded Harwood fell in a third set tiebreak to Arce 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 7-6 (12-10). Second-seeded Lynn won in straight sets over Haulos 6-4, 6-3. St. Bonaventure's Nurmi outlasted Penn senior Andy Kolker in a third set tiebreak 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). Fritz started his day off with a straight-sets win over Murali 6-3, 6-3. Rubin lost to the St. Bonaventure's Price 6-4, 6-2. Lecher won convincingly over Qureshi 6-0, 6-1. The second match of the day was not as competitive as the Quakers routed St. Joseph's (3-4), 6-1. Again, doubles play went the way of the Quakers as they made a clean sweep on the day with six total victories. Fritz and Pu defeated the Hawks' pair of Francisco Velazquez and Van Homer Pangilinan 8-6. Lecher and Rubin were again winners as they beat Jimmy Holland and A.J. Garabedian 8-5. Fairbanks and Lynn continued their strong play with a 8-3 'W' over Chris Spencer and Antonio Aniello. The Quakers ended the day winning five out of the six singles matches all in straight sets. Pu topped Holland 6-1, 6-2. Fairbanks beat Spencer 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Justin Lavner defeated Pangilinan 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Karim Rahimtoola lost in a super set to the Hawks' Greg Chang 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (13-11). Freshman Ed Silver beat Garabedian 6-3, 6-2. In his third match of the day, Fritz defeated Velazquez 6-2, 6-2. With his solid performance on Sunday, the Penn junior is feeling the best he has all season. "Finally, I was able to execute my game," Fritz said. "And now I'm playing the way I want to play." Yesterday's performance has the Quakers content with the direction in which they are moving. "It was great," Fritz said. "Finally everybody executed today and that should give a lot of confidence going into next weekend."
