With today's issue, the 119th Board of Editors and Managers officially takes the helm of the most-read college newspaper in the country. As our predecessors have done for the past 118 years, we will strive to provide this campus with the most current, accurate and thought-provoking information through our stories, photographs and columns. We have worked hard to reach these positions, and we will work even harder to move every aspect of The Daily Pennsylvanian forward on the trail blazed by our editors and managers over the past century. With our news coverage, we will attempt to tell you not only what's happening in campus and urban life, but also why it's important that you read about it. We will provide more features, profiles and in-depth analyses of the biggest stories and newsmakers on a daily basis. The sports staff will work hard to give you more than just a recap of the day's games. We will bring you broader coverage than ever before, with a renewed focus on sports issues and features. The photo department will be more than just a supplement to the day's news. We plan to send photographers to all sporting events, both on and off campus, and ensure that we have more photographers available and ready for breaking news. And 34th Street, our arts and entertainment magazine, will be bringing its focus back to campus, with more features and articles about people in the community and the quirks of their daily lives. As always, we encourage you to take advantage of our Web site. We have redesigned dailypennsylvanian.com over the past year, and we will continue to provide enhanced content, photo galleries and breaking news as it comes in. We are also planning a major redesign of the paper itself, updating our appearance to provide a fresh new look to one of the nation's oldest college newspapers. But our work over the next year is only half of the equation. While we are financially and editorially independent of the University, we still must be held accountable by our readers if we are to make any progress this year. We ask that you read the paper each day with a thoughtful eye. If you see something that has not been covered to your satisfaction, call us and let us know. If you disagree with one of our columnists, write a letter to the editor. Better yet, come to our introductory meeting this Wednesday and see how we put the paper together each day. We encourage all of you who want to make an impact on this paper to join our staff. We take our newspaper very seriously, and we hope that you do as well. We will do our very best to serve you over the next year, and we hope you enjoy the fruits of our efforts.
