(See below for corrections.)Setting many new precedents for future runners, the Penn men's track and field team shattered several records this past weekend at the Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass. Beating his own record from last year, senior Sam Burley flew through the 800m race in a highly competitive field in 1:48.16, finishing first and setting a new Penn record. "The facility is brand new, and the track felt very fast," Burley said. "This meet felt so much better than our first, not only because of the amazing facility, but also because we've been training very hard. It's paying off for all of us." Fellow senior Brian Abram also set an indoor team record. He topped the 55m field in a time of 6.43 seconds in the preliminary round and won the final with a time of 6.56. But the upperclassmen weren't the only ones pulling in impressive results -- the third Penn indoor record of the meet was set by sophomore Dusty Lieb, who ran the 5000m in 14:09.45 Also scoring points for the Quakers were freshmen Peter Cochran, who finished fifth in the long jump (6.10 meters) and Michael Daley, who leaped 13.18 meters to land a second place finish in the triple jump competition. "The freshmen are doing really well, considering this is only the second meet for many of us," freshman Mark Materna said. "This was a great first step in college racing -- highly competitive and very different from high school." Materna had an impressive third-place finish in the open mile race with a time of 4:17.93 -- only seven seconds behind teammate Steve Hayes who finished in 4:10.32 in the individual mile. Materna, like many others, echoed Burley's sentiments about the quickness of the Boston University track. Sophomores Neal Wojdowski and Brent James garnered fourth-place finishes in the pole vault (4.5 meters) and the long jump (63.66 meters) respectively, in a field filled with many competitors. "After changing up our workouts a bit from the beginning of the year, we're starting to get the results we expected," Burley said. "We moved away from strength and base work to more event-specific training. So, I wasn't too surprised when we came out with some really great times this past weekend."

Corrections

This article noted that Brian Abram set a new track record in the 55 meter with a time of 6.43 seconds. In fact, this is a not a record.
