New coach to lead W. Track in first meet
With a new coach at the helm in Gwen Harris, and experienced runners returning to the squad, the Penn women's track team has its first competition of the indoor season this Saturday at Brown.
While this meet is important for tracking the team's success, players and coaches do not see it to be critical in terms of record and scores.
"We are just trying to have fun with it," junior runner Kai Ivory said. "We just want to see where out training's at."
The Quakers have been in conditioning all fall in preparation for the grueling winter and spring seasons.
Ivory, a co-captain, will be competing in the long jump, hurdles and will be a leg in the 4 x 40 relay this weekend.
The meet will be more important for the less-experienced underclassmen.
"The underclassmen have been doing really well with training," Ivory said. "But this will be our first time to see how hyped up they are."
The major change in this year's program is the addition of coach Gwen Harris. She replaces Betty Costanza -- the founder of Penn's women's track program. Harris served as head coach of track and field and cross country at James Madison University for 17 years.
She was named NCAA District III Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year in 1998.
