Dartmouth cuts swimming
Last Monday, Dartmouth director of athletics and recreation, Joann Harper, announced that the school will eliminate its men's and women's swimming and diving programs, effective at the end of this season.
The decision stems from Dartmouth's need to cut $262,000 from its current budget -- eliminating the swim programs will free up $212,000 in the budget annually beginning next year. Dartmouth athletics also felt that it would need a $25-million renovation of its pool to make it adequate with Division-I standards.
Penn coach Mike Schnur has not contacted any Dartmouth athletes yet because of NCAA regulations but said that he may be expecting calls from both transfers and incoming freshmen.
Columbia fires head football coach
After a 1-9 season, including an 0-7 record in the Ivy League, Columbia announced that Ray Tellier will no longer be at the helm of the Lions. This past season was his 14th roaming the Lions' sidelines, where he finished 3-7 in each of the past three years.
In 1996, his 8-2 season earned him the Division 1-AA national coach of the year award. Tellier will remain at Columbia as the assistant athletic director in the coming year.
Volleyball learns NCAA future
After finishing the regular season 22-4, the Penn volleyball team learned on Sunday that it will travel to No. 13 Penn State (24-7) on Friday for its first-round match in the NCAA tournament.
Last year the Quakers fell to UCLA in their first ever tournament game.
The Quakers head into Friday on a 12-match winning streak and have won 21 of their last 22 matches.
Should the Quakers win, they would face the winner of the Temple-Manhattan College match on Saturday, also in State College, Pa.
