The Penn men's basketball team jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back on Saturday night as it defeated Temple, 71-46, in the nightcap of the Philly Big 5 Classic. The Quakers (2-2) hit 15 three pointers, one short of the school record set against Drexel last season.
Penn guard David Klatsky came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. Andrew Toole was also 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 overall for 14. Temple's Alex Wesby led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting in the losing effort.
It was the fifth straight loss for the Owls (0-5), who are out to the worst start in the 107-year history of the basketball program. Starting guards Maurice Collins and David Hawkins combined to shoot 1-for-18 from the floor, and Temple was outrebounded, 36-25, including a 19-5 deficit in the first half, as Penn rushed out to a 41-16 halftime edge.
"The rebounding efforts of [starting forward Antywane] Robinson and [starting center Keith] Butler have just been horrendous," Temple coach John Chaney said.
Ugonna Onyekwe scored 10 points and Jeff Schiffner added 12 points for the Quakers.
In the other action of the afternoon, St. Joseph's topped Drexel, 50-37, while Villanova outlasted La Salle, 74-71. St. Joe's (5-0) is out to its best start in 20 years.
