The Penn football team rode a 21-point second quarter to a 49-14 rout of Dartmouth on Sunday at Franklin Field. The Quakers are now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League.
Penn squandered opportunities early, as Mike Mitchell was intercepted twice in the end zone, both times by Clayton Smith. The Quakers finally got on the board when Vince Alexander intercepted a Brian Mann pass and returned it 42 yards for the score.
Mitchell tossed a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to cap off long drives. Dan Castles caught a six-yard touchdown to cap a 13 play, 80 yard drive, and Rob Milanese hauled in a three-yard score after a 9 play, 77 yard drive.
Penn's special teams had a major mistake for the second straight game, as Dartmouth's Brian Skeffington blocked a Josh Appell punt and returned it four yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter. It was the second straight week that Penn had a blocked punt returned for a score by the opposition.
Mike Mitchell finished 31-of-43 for 428 yards and four touchdowns. Erik Bolinder set a career high in catches by the first quarter, and finished with nine catches for 102 yards. Stephen Faulk was the leading rusher with 16 carries for 65 yards.
Rob Milanese had an 82-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. He had six catches for 140 yards and two scores overall. Kevin DeSmedt had a 47-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring in the fourth.
The Quakers have a short week, as they take on Villanova on Thursday on the Main Line.
