The opening tip of the 2002-03 men's basketball season is still months away, and yet Yale and Princeton are already competing.

The Elis won the first game.

Former Princeton center Dominick Martin transferred to Yale on July 20 in one of a few notable transfers that happened during the summer months.

For NCAA rules, the six-foot-ten sophomore will be ineligible to play during this season, and will have three years of eligibility left starting in 2003-04.

Martin suffered through a disappointing freshman season at Old Nassau, averaging only 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 26 games.

Heavily recruited by Yale while in high school, Martin turned down the Elis -- as well as Stanford and North Carolina State -- in favor of the Tigers.

As a senior at A.C. Reynolds High School in Ashevile, N.C., Martin averaged 21 points and 12 boards per game.

Martin was not the only player the Tigers lost. Guard Tom McLaughlin left Princeton for William & Mary on Aug. 28.

McLaughlin -- who will have three years of eligibility starting in 2003-04 -- only played in six games for the Tigers last season, scoring only 16 points. All of those came in the 78-24 romp over Division III Western Maryland.

McLaughlin scored 1,600 points in high school -- in just three years -- before forcing to sit out his senior year of high school due to a torn ACL.

Dartmouth added a transfer late in the spring, point guard Adam Warren.

Warren will sit out this season and will have three years of eligibility remaining after this year.

While Yale added Martin via transfer over the summer, former Elis recruit Alex Craft opted to attend Southern Methodist on May 13.

Transfers

Yale: Gained former Princeton center Dominick Martin, a sophomore. Lost Alex Craft, a new recruit, to Southern Methodist.

Princeton: Lost Martin to Yale. Also lost sophomore Tom McLaughlin to William & Mary.

Dartmouth: Gained sophomore point guard Adam Warren from Denver University.

Warren, Martin and McLaughlin will have three years of elegibility remaining beginning in 2003-04.
