Nothing personal To the Editor:
I would like to address a comment made by InterFraternity Council President Conor Daly ("NEC to give up U. Council seat," The Daily Pennsylvanian, 4/02/02). In the article, he referred to the Nominations and Elections Committee as "no-talent ass-clowns" and lambasted it for not choosing his organization to have a seat on University Council. He further criticized the "behind-closed-doors" decision-making process used to choose which groups sit on the UC.
As humorous as his comments are, they are uncalled for and immature. It seems that Conor feels the decision is a personal affront.
As a member of the NEC, I can assure him that it was not. We are charged with making a decision that we feel benefits the greater student body, not any particular interest.
The NEC is an apolitical body. That is why we are given the duty of choosing what groups sit on the UC in the first place. As for our decision-making process, it is kept private for the same reason that a jury deliberates privately. We make our decisions as a whole group, not as a group of individuals with our own personal interests. Our body is much more judicial in nature than legislative.
I can understand why someone would be upset about losing a seat on the UC. I do not think, though, that lashing out with personal attacks is the way to deal with it. If Conor thinks that the IFC is qualified to sit on UC, than he should reapply for the two new student group seats.
