Penn softball travels to Florida for Rebel Winter Games

While many Penn students who are traveling to Florida this Spring Break will be laying out on the beach, others will be partaking in a grueling week of doubleheaders.

The Penn softball team will trek to Orlando for the break to compete in the Rebel Winter Games.

The Quakers are scheduled to play two games each day Saturday to Saturday, with only Thursday off to rest.

Last year, Penn went 4-10 in the Rebel Winter Games.

The Red and Blue are coming off their first weekend of spring play with a 2-2 record, having split doubleheaders against Wagner and Fordham. They will face Wagner again this Monday and are looking to avenge the loss.

"Our team is really pumped up to face Wagner," Penn sophomore pitcher Nicole Borgstadt said. "We want to take back the win that they took from us.

Wagner will be the only familiar team that the Quakers will face. They have played against many of the other teams in previous years, but these teams are not a part of the Quakers' normal regular-season schedule.

Though this brutal week of competition may be tough for the squad this early in the season, Penn is hoping to gain confidence and momentum to propel it into the Ivy League games.

Last year, the Red and Blue finished in seventh place in the Ivy League with a record of 3-11. The Quakers were 15-32 overall.

The Quakers will face Princeton -- their first Ivy League opponent -- on March 30.

Burley heads to

National Champs

Sam Burley, a middle-distance runner on the Penn men's track team, is headed to the NCAA Championships this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.

Burley will be competing in the 800 meters. He qualified last month at the Penn State Collegiates.

The junior is the No. 11 seed, having run a Penn-record time of 1:48.85. The No. 1 runner is Otekile Lekote of South Carolina with a time of 1:47.46.

Burley was an All-American last season outdoors when he finished seventh at National Championships, and he finished 11th outdoors as a freshman in the 800.

Burley has won the 800 in several Heptagonal Championships during his time at Penn, most recently during the 2001 outdoor season.

Onyekwe named Ivy Player of the Year

As the Penn men's basketball team heads to Lafayette tomorrow for the finals of the Ivy League playoffs, the Quakers will be carrying a little extra hardware with them.

Penn forward Ugonna Onyekwe was named Ivy League Player of the Year yesterday, and was also named to first team All-Ivy.

The junior was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year two seasons ago, and was a unanimous selection to the first team.

Also named to the first squad were Penn juniors Koko Archibong and Andrew Toole.

Rounding out the Ivy League first team were a pair of guards -- Brown's Earl Hunt and Harvard's Patrick Harvey.

Yale's Alex Gamboa was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
