Wrestling mops up in Ivy League awards

The Penn wrestling team won its seventh consecutive Ivy League title this year, and so when the Ancient Eight announced its selections for All-Ivy, the results were no surprise.

The Quakers placed eight wrestlers on the team, and senior Yoshi Nakamura -- who recently took third at NCAA National Championships -- was named Ivy League Wrestler of the Year. Nakamura was a unanimous first team All-Ivy selection at 157 pounds.

Joining him on the first team was Josh Henson, who exceeded all expectations this season to finish seventh at National Championships at 165 pounds, earning him All-American status. Henson was unranked at the beginning of the season, but was a unanimous selection to the first team.

Rounding out the Red and Blue's group on the first team is sophomore 125-pounder Mason Lenhard, who was 4-0 against Ivy League opponents and placed third at Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships.

On the second team, All-American Rick Springman leads the Penn group at 174 pounds. The senior finished sixth at Nationals, and he won the Fletcher Award at Easterns, which goes to the wrestler who accumulates the most points over four years of competition at EIWAs.

Joe Henson also received a second team nod at 149 pounds. The senior was runner-up at EIWAs, and competed in the consolation round at NCAA Championships. He finished the season ranked 10th in the nation.

Freshman Matt Feast, who had a stunning debut season, also made the second team at heavyweight. Feast fell in the semifinals of EIWAs and won his first round match at NCAA Championships.

A pair of sophomores -- Marcus Schontube at 184 pounds and Mike Faust at 197 pounds --ÿwere named honorable mention All-Ivy.

The Red and Blue finished the season 5-0 in the Ivy League, and finished second in the East. Penn finished 11th at National Championships after being ranked No. 9 at the end of the regular season, the Quakers highest ranking ever.
