The Penn men's basketball team defeated Brown, 82-63, on Friday, and now controls its own destiny after Princeton took down Yale, 59-46.
The Quakers (20-6, 7-3 Ivy League) trailed the Bears, 21-14, midway through the first half, but scored eight straight in 37 seconds to take a one-point advantage. Penn never trailed again, as it turned the 8-0 spark into a 24-5 run to close out the half up 12.
Junior forward Ugonna Onyekwe led the Quakers with 24 points on 11 of 14 shooting. Onyekwe also grabbed nine rebounds.
Penn had four scorers in double figures, as Jeff Schiffner had 12, Andrew Toole had 11, and Koko Archibong netted 10.
For the Bears (15-9, 6-5), Earl Hunt had 19 points and Alai Nuualiitia had 16.
The Quakers' stifling defense thwarted the Bears all night, holding Brown to only 26 points in the first half and to 3 for 14 - 21.4 percent - shooting from three-point range for the game.
Late in the game, freshman guard Tim Begley followed Toole's missed jumper with a thunderous dunk, putting Penn up 73-49 with only 4:29 to play.
The Quakers were hot again from the field, shooting 53.4 percent for the game. Penn made 7 of 15 three-point attempts.
The Tigers (13-9, 8-2) jumped out to a 12-4 lead against the Elis (17-8, 9-2) and never looked back. With Yale's loss, Penn now controls its own destiny, and hosts the Elis tomorrow night at the Palestra at 7 p.m.
In the other two Ivy League games on Saturday, Columbia topped Dartmouth, 62-58, and Harvard beat Cornell, 55-46.
The Penn women's basketball team improved to 10-13 and 6-4 in the Ivies with a 72-66 victory over Brown. Jewel Clark scored 19 points and grabbed 17 boards for her sixth Ivy League double-double of the season. The Quakers play at Yale tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
