Football team grabs national honors

Despite the fact that the season has been over for more than a month, four members of the Penn football team were named to Dan Hansen's Football Gazette I-AA all-American team yesterday.

Senior Kris Ryan, Penn's all-time leading rusher with 3,137 yards, received a third-team nod, while fellow seniors Jeff Hatch, John Galan, and Gavin Hoffman garnered honorable mention selections.

It was the first national honor for Ryan, who had a career high 1,304 yards rushing this season. The tailback finishes his career with 34 touchdowns, second all-time at Penn.

It is just one of many postseason awards for Hatch, an offensive lineman, who was also named to the American Football Coaches Association and Associated Press all-American teams. Galan, a defensive lineman, was also first-team all-Ivy this season.

Hoffman, a quarterback, was selected to second team all-Ivy and ends his career as the program's all-time leader in passing yards (7,542), completions (651), and touchdowns (50).

The Quakers won their first seven games this year en route to an 8-1 record, with a second place 6-1 mark in the Ivy League. They finished ranked No. 22 in the USA Today/ESPN I-AA poll and No. 24 in the Sports Network poll.

Big 5 releases Hall of Fame Inductions

Bob Weinhauer, the only coach to lead the Penn men's basketball team to the NCAA Final Four, was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame yesterday.

Weinhauer compiled a 99-45 record at the helm of the Quakers, including three seasons with over 20 wins. During his five-year tenure as coach, Penn made appearances in four NCAA tournaments, one NIT, won four Ivy League championships and two Big 5 titles.

The Red and Blue's best season came in 1978-79, when Weinhauer led Penn to a 25-7 record and an amazing run through the NCAA Tournament. Penn ended in fourth-place and was only stopped by eventual champion Michigan St. Weinhauer was named Eastern Coach of the Year.

In addition to Penn's Weinhauer, several other Big 5 legends were named to the Hall of Fame. Leading that group are Temple's Aaron McKie, who now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers, and Eddie Jones, now a member of the Miami Heat.

In women's hoops, La Salle's Chrissie Donahue, a three time first team all-Big 5 honoree, and St. Joseph's Amy Mallon, the 1993 Big 5 Player of the Year, were also honored.

Lastly, 30-year Associated Press Big 5 beat reporter for the Big 5, Jack Scheuer, was also named to the Hall.
