Three Quakers take home nat'l honors

The Penn women's soccer team, who completed a phenomenal 13-2-3 season this fall, added several more trophies to their bookcase recently.

In the Soccerbuzz.com awards, Penn coach Darren Ambrose was named runner-up Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year, while strikers Katy Cross and Rachelle Snyder were named to the Mid-Atlantic all-Freshman team. Cross also picked up a first team selection to the first team all Mid-Atlantic.

It was the first national honor this season for Ambrose, who improved the Quakers from 10-8-2 a season ago and guided them to their first-ever share of the Ivy League championship.

In his two seasons at Penn, Ambrose has compiled a 23-10-5 record.

For Cross, it was just one of many in a long list of awards that the talented freshman from California has received. She was also named second team all-American and first team all-Mid-Atlantic by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Cross also received a few league awards as well. She won the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award, and was named first team all-Ivy along with junior defender Jen Valentine.

Cross led the Quakers and the Ivy League in almost every category this season. She was first in shots (57), assists (10), points (34), and was tied for the league lead in goals (12) and game-winning goals (five). Her 34 points shattered the Penn single-season record by eight.

It is the third award Snyder has gained for her also spectacular season. Snyder was previously named to second team all-Ivy and NSCAA second team all Mid-Atlantic. Snyder, who set a Penn record with four goals against Delaware on Sept. 9, finished the season with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists.
