After a two-week racing hiatus, the Penn men's heavyweight and lightweight crew teams return to the water this weekend. Both teams are looking to finish their fall season with the same strength and vigor they have displayed in recent races.
The Quakers will take to the chilly waters of the Schuylkill River tomorrow for their final fall race, The Frostbite Regatta.
After opening the season with a disappointing second-place finish in the Navy Day Regatta and a dismal 20th in the Head of the Charles, the men's heavyweight team placed a satisfying second at the Head of the Schuylkill. Penn hopes to go out strong with a win at the Frostbite this weekend.
"It's our last day on the water," heavyweight coach Stan Bergman said, "so we want to go out and have a strong performance."
The heavyweight freshmen team will not be competing in the Frostbite Regatta, but will travel to Princeton, along with Penn's freshmen lightweights, on Sunday to row in the Belly of the Carnegie against other Ivy League teams.
The men's lightweight team has exceeded all expectations this season and hopes to end with a win. For the first time in over two years, the Quakers won their race at the Navy Day Regatta. They followed that up with a second-place finish at the Head of the Schuylkill.
"I'm hoping to continue what we've started this fall season," senior lightweight coxswain Olivia Kuhn-Lloyd. "We've really been coming together."
The races this weekend will differ from those in which the Quakers have competed this season. The fall season consists of head races, where each team rows separately down the river for a distance of 2.6 miles. This weekend's race, however, will be conducted in the style of the spring races in which all crews row against each other at the same time.
The Quakers will face crews from a number of schools, including Dowling College -- which beat the heavyweights at the Navy Day Regatta -- Columbia, Temple and Villanova.
