At Franklin Field fans were treated to a defensive battle as Penn pulled away early to defeat Yale 21-3. Penn improved to 3-0 in the Ivy League, while Yale [3-2, 1-2 Ivy] took a step backwards after having defeated Penn last season.
On defense for the Quakers, defensive tackle John Galan recorded 3.5 sacks and forced a fumble that was returned 41 yards for a touchdown by safety Kunle Williams. The Quakers totaled an overwhelming 10 sacks as a team.
The rushing games on both sides had trouble getting out of the blocks. Penn senior Kris Ryan, who entered the game 4th in the nation averaging 151.3 yards per game, was held to 79 yards by the Elis defense. Ryan did culminate each of the Red and Blue's two offensive scoring drives with a pair of one yard touchdown runs.
Yale's rushing attack looked out of synch against a Penn defense that was averaging 53 yards rushing allowed per game. The Elis netted -19 yards against Penn's defensive front.
Yale wide receiver Billy Brown racked up 127 receiving yards in the game, but Yale was only able to capitalize on its first drive of the game. After a fake punt on fourth down, the Elis were stuffed in the red zone and settled for a field goal.
Quakers quarterback Gavin Hoffman, who was sacked 7 times in the contest, completed 18-26 for 235 yards and was interceptionless for his second game in a row.
