The Daily Pennsylvanian takes great pride in the integrity of our coverage. Our news and sports stories pass through an extensive editing process, which includes multiple reviews for points of style, grammar and most of all, factual accuracy.
A similar process screens all materials which appear on our editorial page. Editors are tasked with ensuring that these pieces, even though they represent the views and styles of individual writers, conform to the same standards of accuracy and fairness which we demand in all other sections of the paper.
To an overwhelming degree, that process proves successful. But invariably -- in the process of producing a daily newspaper -- some mistakes do occur.
When incorrect information appears in our news or sports sections, corrections to that effect appear in the appropriate box on page two.
When a columnist errs, the individual situation is reviewed by our editors. Generally, appropriate changes are left off of page two, preserving what we believe is a crucial separation between the editorial page and the rest of the newspaper.
That separation, in fact, is what enables us to address such issues -- as well as the vast range of campus opinions which we attempt to recognize -- as objectively as possible.
The DP does employ several methods for rectifying editorial page mistakes. The publication of letters to the editor, a columnist's personal retraction and editor's boxes like this one are all devices we have used and will continue to use to clear up mistakes when they occur.
What's more, the responsibility of "fact checking" content is one that this newspaper takes seriously. We have not abandoned that responsibility, and we have no intention of doing so.
