Despite the official hiring of Michael Dowd to be the full-time women's tennis coach and the resignation of Debbie Newman from her position as executive assistant to the director of athletics, employee activity was not very busy this summer. Still needed is the hiring of a women's crew coach that will allow Stan Bergman more regular time to concentrate on men's crew and enable the new coach to be fully devoted to the women's crew program. Expect a woman with a great deal of experience to be named as that coach. Penn is also still in need of a softball coach to replace Linda Carothers, whose contract was not renewed at the end of this past softball season. Both searches are in their final stages with athletic staff meeting to decide on the most qualified candidates. An announcement should be forthcoming by the beginning of the school year.
