The University's Department of Recreation organized one of the most successful softball leagues this summer for Penn's employees, students, and part of the community. The Franklin Flyers were crowned the champions of the summer league after a dramatic 5-4 come-from-behind victory. Tony Henry, a member of the Flyers, provided the drama in the form of a last inning blast that brought in three runs to overtake the heavily favored Medical Maniacs team. Another highlight of the season -- the first ever all-star game -- was hosted by Recreation with assistance from a few teams' volunteers. Dining Services provided food and beverages while teammates gathered to watch their team's representatives play their best. Quang Bui, from the Diamondbacks, was awarded the MVP for his stellar defense in leftfield and his powerful bat at the plate. Prior to the all-star game, a home run hitting contest was held, and Robert Hassett and Ann Marie Dube were victorious in the men's and women's competitions, respectively. Players from around the 22-team league commented on how well-organized the softball league was, and reflected thankfully on the care of the Recreation Department's staff.
