University Police arrested a man for carjacking last night, minutes after he allegedly threatened a female student with a replica of an antique rifle and stole her car on the 3900 block of Baltimore Avenue. The incident took place at approximately 8:50 p.m. The student called police immediately after she was carjacked. A description of her car and license plate number went out over Philadelphia and Penn Police radio channels, University Police Sgt. Keith Christian said. Three University Police officers, all in separate marked cars, spotted a man driving the student's car eastbound on the Schuylkill Expressway and pulled him over near the Vare Avenue exit, the first past campus, Christian said. Police arrested the man at 8:57 p.m. Police will ask the District Attorney's office to charge the male with carjacking -- a federal crime that carries a mandatory prison sentence, Christian said. Late last night, University Police officers and investigators -- in conjunction with Philadelphia Police -- processed the suspect and questioned him at the Philadelphia's Southwest Detectives headquarters at 55th and Pine streets.
