A 21-year-old College of General Studies student was hit by a car at 9:50 a.m. yesterday at the corner of 37th and Chestnut streets, police said. The victim was listed in critical condition last night after doctors performed surgery on her head and legs earlier in the day. Late last night, the woman was back in surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to Barbara Cassel, an assistant vice provost in charge of victim support. The accident occurred as the student left her home at International House and attempted to cross the street, University Police Capt. John Richardson said. Two witnesses to the accident said the woman continued walking across the street after a light had changed, Richardson added. An oncoming car swerved and missed the woman. The car behind it could not stop in time, and it hit her. Philadelphia and University police responded to the accident, and a Philadelphia Fire and Rescue unit transported the victim to HUP, Richardson said. The Korean-born student is enrolled in a non-degree English proficiency program. The accident was the first one on campus involving a student in almost a year. In November 1995, College junior Jae Lee was struck by a car at 34th and Walnut streets. He returned to campus after undergoing brain surgery at HUP and rehabilitation at Bryn Mawr Hospital. And in March 1995, two students were seriously injured in a car accident on Kelly Drive in Fairmount Park.
