University and Philadelphia police responded last night to reports that two groups of males exchanged gunfire at 40th and Market streets at approximately 9 p.m. University Police said none of the witnesses or men involved with the incident were affiliated with Penn. Immediately after receiving the report, University Police converged on the crime scene to protect and collect evidence. They also visited area hospitals to interview incoming gunshot victims that may have been involved in the incident. Officers found a .9 mm bullet casing and blood stains at 40th and Market streets, along with several casings and live bullets at a housing project across the street. Soon after the incident, police officers began guarding a man who had been admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with a gunshot wound through one hand. At the time, they believed he was shot in the incident but later discovered the victim was shot in a separate incident at 60th Street. A female witness who notified police of the shooting told an officer at 40th and Market streets that she saw two groups of three and four males shoot at each other. She said one group left the scene in a blue and white Jeep headed toward the housing project, where she said the group lives. Another witness in the area told an officer that he saw four black males running east on Ludlow Street from 39th Street immediately after he heard gunshots.
