and Kate Khatib Philadelphia Police announced yesterday that officers have arrested a suspect in Saturday night's fatal shooting of a passenger on the Market-Frankford subway line. The incident took place as the westbound train pulled into the underground station at 40th and Market streets. According to the Philadelphia Police, 21-year-old Keyaba Bradley, of the 6200 block of Pine Street, was arrested in connection with the attack. Bradley is being held on weapons and murder charges in the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center. According to Philadelphia Police Captain Patrick Dempsey, 26-year-old Danton Taylor was shot once in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun and pronounced dead at the scene. Dempsey said police are unsure of the motive for the attack, which occurred at 8:26 p.m. Saturday night, and said there is a "high probability" that the shooting may have been accidental. Director of Victim Support and Special Services Maureen Rush called the crime "shocking," adding that "if you ride or have ridden the train, a crime like this touches the heart." But Rush added that students should not be afraid to ride on SEPTA. "An occurrence of this type is very rare for SEPTA," she said. "Violent crimes are very low." Rush explained that SEPTA has added "safe areas" in the stations, allowing passengers to wait in well-lit, visible areas for their trains to arrive, without having to venture down to the platforms. "These are designed to give passengers a feeling of safety," she said. In addition, SEPTA has improved security by increasing the number of officers at the stations and the frequency of patrols, according to Rush. The preliminary hearing in Bradley's trial will be Wednesday, February 7, at 8:30 a.m. in room 903 of the Criminal Justice Center.
