An exhibit highlighting different aspects of the University and how it is perceived by student artists opened in Houston Hall on Friday. Done in color and in black and white, the display included paintings and sketches of sections of the Furness Building, the University Museum, the Annenberg School and the Quadrangle by University students. The Social Planning and Events Committee sponsored the event to raise art awareness on campus, said Jennifer Pocius, exhibit curator. Exhibit Director Jennifer Rizzi said the display also allowed students to develop an appreciation for art and to see how things work together. "It's a nice way for people to appreciate the campus and see it in a new light," Rizzi said. Although only undergraduates' work was displayed, both graduate and undergraduate students were encouraged to submit their work to the committee for evaluation. College junior Heather Walleck, who had several pieces in the exhibit, said the exhibit gave students an opportunity to "realize that they had talent they didn't know they had." College junior Vinita Sidhu, who also contributed to the exhibit, felt the exhibit was a "nice opportunity to hang up something you've done." Friends and teachers attending the opening were supportive of the exhibitors. "It's interesting finished work," said Matthew Bixler, project coordinator at the Data Communications and Computing Services. "It lends a different light to see the same scene depicted on a different medium. It's good to see art [which] at times rivals some of what the University owns." "It's really nice for the students to display something they worked hard on and to invite the rest of the University to see what they do," College junior Sarah Kotler said. The exhibit will be displayed in the Bowl Room of Houston Hall through November 19.
