A University student was stabbed by another student after an argument at Murphy's Tavern early Saturday morning, police said yesterday. The injured student was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with lacerations on the side of his head, Philadelphia police said. His current condition is unknown. The two students, who police would not identify, fought against the bar's juke box and left blood all around the area, said a College sophomore, who witnessed the incident at the tavern, located at 44th and Spruce streets. "I heard one of them got his throat cut, but I don't know what happened," the sophomore said. "There was blood all over the area and a trail leading outside." The sophomore would not allow his name to be used but said he thinks the student used a piece of glass to stab the other student. "From what I saw it was really quick and brutal," he said. "In the beginning of the fight, I heard some glass being broken. I don't see how anybody can get that bloody just by getting hit in the face." When the sophomore went outside he said he saw one of the fighters writhing in pain. He had his face covered with towels, the sophomore said. He said the other fighter was also outside. However, the sophomore said he was not sure which one of the two was bleeding so profusely. "I couldn't see the guy getting hit, and it took three guys to carry outside the one doing the beating," the sophomore said. "The guy who was beating the shit out of the other guy couldn't even walk. I couldn't tell which one was so bloody, because they were both taken outside. It seemed the guy who was being hit still had some strength left, so he could actually make it out." The owner of the bar, Joe Murphy, said last night he was not in the tavern on Friday, but heard about the fight later. "I heard that a grad student's friend got into a fight with someone, a young fellow, probably for some bullshit reason," Murphy said. "Probably over a girl or a seat or something." The sophomore witness said that after the injured student was taken to HUP, the other student just left the scene. "It looked like he just took off," he added. "I would if I were in that situation, and there was no reason for me to hang around." "When the rescue squad got here, in the excitement, [the assailant] just got up and disappeared," Murphy added. Philadelphia police said that no arrests were made in the incident, which is termed an aggravated assault.
