As vice president, Butterfield had primary responsibilty for overseeing all of the University's employees, who make up the second-largest workforce in the city. Butterfield announced earlier this month that she would take a similar post at Stanford University, ending her four year tenure at the University. Stupine will fulfill all of Butterfield's duties while a group called the Diversified Search of Philadelphia, aided by a University advisory committee, selects a replacement. Butterfield was unable to be reached for comment, but said in a press statement that "Barry [Supine]'s appointment accentuates a shared opportunity for problem-solving and building of understanding between the schools and central administrative activites of the University." Some of the human resouces projects that Supine will continue in Butterfield's absence are the development of an employee handbook, benefits-related programs, and a study on equity in the workplace. -- Matthew Selman
