The University is the first educational institution to be so honored by the Society. The four-hour event was highlighted by the presentation of the flags by the University's Navy and Army Reserve Officers Training Corps and speeches by Governor William Casey, childrens' television host Fred Rogers and University president Sheldon Hackney. At its 92nd annual dinner, the Society also honored Rogers for his contributions to children and to Pennsylvania Public Television. Rogers joins other Society honorees including former Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornberg, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, publishing magnate and University alumnus Walter Annenberg, artist Andrew Wyeth, and John Cardinal O'Conner. -- Drew Zoller
