While society members claim the book was removed because it contained a statement which some considered racist, library officials said it was removed because its two-week exhibition period had ended. Vice Provost and Libraries Director Paul Mosher said he was not involved with the agreement made between Philo members and the library, but said that according to other library officials who dealt with Philo about the book, the exhibition agreement was for only two weeks. Mosher said he is looking into the situation and said he would consider housing the book again. "We would like to have it for a specified period of time," Mosher said. "I want them to come through the front door and not the side door." Philo Moderator Jacob Cogan said last night that any information Mosher received about a specified time "is a figment of someone's imagination." Mosher said he was not informed of any agreement until after the book was already in the library. He added that he was out of town when the book was removed last week. -- Roxanne Patel
