BRIEF: Conference on social science begins

The conference, which is titled "Visions of Society: Perspectives of the Social Sciences," is being sponsored by the Univeristy's Program for Assessing and Revitalizing the Social Sciences. In addition to Smelser, featured speakers include: Kenneth Boulding of The Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder; Amitai Etzioni, a sociologist at George Washington University; Lawerence Rosen, an anthropologist at Princeton University; Amartya Sen, an economist at Harvard University; Ann Swindler, a sociologist at the University of California, Berkeley; and William Foote White of the New York School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. Sessions will be held in the Bodek Lounge all day Friday and Saturday and are free and open to the public. -- Steven Ochs
