But first, demolition of the University City Townhomes properties began on Monday after years of protests, attempts to preserve affordable housing in the city, and significant construction delays.
After a four-month delay, demolition of the University City Townhomes properties at 40th and Market streets began earlier this week. Former residents and members of the community — many of whom were shocked by the start of the construction — gathered at the UC Townhomes site on Tuesday to witness the demolition.
This marks a new chapter in a yearslong fight against gentrification in West Philadelphia.
