Pennsylvanians are abandoning Newt Gingrich and throwing their support behind Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, a new statewide poll found.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review/WPXI-TV poll, conducted by Susquehanna Polling and Research, showed that Gingrich’s support in the state sunk to 13 percent from 35 percent six weeks. Santorum’s support soared from 14 percent to 30 percent, virtually tied with Romney’s support, which rose from 18 percent to 29 percent.

Still, Romney was considered the most viable national candidate; 55 percent of the 500 Republicans polled believed he had the best shot to beat Barack Obama.

In a poll of 800 Republicans and Democrats in Pennsylvania, Romney was neck and neck Obama, 45 percent to 43 percent. Obama led slightly against Santorum, 47 to 43 percent.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46 percent.

It was conducted from Feb. 2 to Feb. 6, before Santorum’s surprising victories on Tuesday, which may have increased his support in the state.
