Police have detained a “person of interest” who they think is connected to the string of recent gunpoint robberies.

Captain Fred Carbonara of the Drexel University Police arrested today the white male suspected to have committed four armed robberies in the past two weeks, according to Niki Gianakaris, Drexel’s Director of Media Relations.

The suspect was apprehended at 34th and Hamilton streets. He was wearing the same gray hoodie and carrying the black mask, gloves and gun used in the robberies, according to Gianakaris.

Police have not confirmed he is indeed the suspect and are still continuing investigation, said Lieutenant John Walker of the Southwest Detectives Division in the Philadelphia Police Department.

The suspect, in a gray jacket and black mask and hat, allegedly robbed Chipotle Mexican Grill at 3925 Walnut Street Sunday evening, which prompted the Division of Public Safety to issue a UPennAlert. He was last seen fleeing east on Walnut Street, according to DPS.

On April 26, the Green Line Café at 4426 Locust Street was robbed at gunpoint by a white male with a similar description. On April 30 and May 4, the Green Line Café at 3649 Lancaster Ave. was also robbed at gunpoint by whom police believe to be the same suspect.

Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush said there is currently a “full court press” on and around campus looking for the suspect. DPS is working closely with PPD, AlliedBarton security officers, the public safety divisions of Drexel University and University of the Sciences and the public.

“This is clearly a concern. This is somebody who’s doing too many things in the same area,” Rush said. “He’s pointing a gun and desperate because he’s doing it this quickly in succession.”
