Your Voice | Spring Fling animal cruelty
· April 20, 2011, 5:48 am
Apparently the Zeta Psi fraternity members decided to spend some of Daddy’s money and rent a bunch of animals for a zoo-like Spring Fling party. What fun! Except for the handling of the camel they rented. It was, at the very least, exploitative and thoughtless treatment, if not animal cruelty.
I can’t help but wonder, did the Zeta Psi brothers really think that a camel would like being stepped on by drunk sorority sisters or enjoy having beer spilled on its head? Or maybe they just don’t care about anyone but themselves? Regardless, it is embarrassing for this University to sanction such self-absorbed and pathetic behavior. I pray that in future Flings we don’t continue to throw Penn’s reputation — and the rights of animals to be treated with respect — out a window.

For the past three years that I've been at Penn, the Petting Zoo has had a nauseatingly strong presence during Fling. Animals have beautiful purposes, but that does not include being abused by belligerent, drunk, entitled Penn students. I wish people would become more aware of their actions. We all could use more kindness in this world.

A scholar and a gentleman this man is! (well, sometimes, anyway). Are you really surprised that vapid Penn undergrads would treat an animal in such fashion? Bear baiting is surely on the agenda for Hey Day.

This is completely disgusting and it is about time UPenn taught the little brats at Zeta PSI a lesson. I am horrified by what occurred on campus and more disgusted by the lack of response to it from Administration. As far as I am concerned, this had better be the last petting zoo activity on campus and the frat boys ought to have to pay a hefty fine, AND the company that allows them to RENT these animals needs to be fined as well.

A petting zoo has no place on Penn's Campus at any time, especially during Fling where the animals can be groped by drunk undergraduates. Can't they just grope each other like any other normal weekend?

Really George? As a Med student I would have though you'd be aware of Penn's policy on animal testing - fun fact: they do it!*
Every news organization that picked this up basically described it as a non-issue on a slow news day, and explained how this clearly isn't animal cruelty... ::slow clap:: for accomplishing nothing

Hey VanityShow, animal testing is done for medical research. Last time I checked, there were no new cures discovered by having drunk kids screaming and groping animals. Obviously the petting zoo company will still loan the money to Zeta Psi since they are rolling around in a truck load of their parents' money.
