Multiple students reported gunshots near 41st and Pine streets at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. "No weapons were found, no suspects were found [and] no injuries" were reported, Division of Public Safety spokeswoman Stef Cella confirmed at 2:05 a.m., adding that Penn Police were still highly concentrated around the area of 41st and Spruce streets.

Cella said at about 1:05 a.m. that “Penn Police, Philadelphia Police and Allied Barton Security are investigating sounds that are thought to be gunshots.”

A UPenn Alert — distributed through text messages, e-mails and phone calls — was issued at about 1:15 a.m. informing the Penn community that gunshots had been fired in the area of 41st and Pine streets. The alert urged people to stay away from the area and to check the DPS website for more details. A second UPenn Alert was issued at about 1:50 a.m. stating that the area around 41st and Pine streets was all clear.

College sophomore Isabel Friedman, who lives on the corner of 41st and Pine streets, reported hearing four to five gunshots in quick succession at about 12:40 a.m.

"Our neighbor said he saw a car backing out on 41st Street," she said. "The shooting happened and soon after there were police cars swarming the block."??

“One shot hit my window. I think that it was on the second or third shot,” College junior Lauren Rothberg, who lives with Friedman, said.

“I thought it was fireworks, so I wasn’t scared, but now I am. I looked out of the window and there were six cop cars closing down the street,” added Rothberg, a former Daily Pennsylvanian contributing writer.

?A College sophomore who wished to remain anonymous in order to avoid association with the incident said he called 911 after hearing two gunshots from 40th and Pine streets. The police officers he spoke to said they had not heard anything but would investigate.??

College senior Grant Dubler also heard shots fired at 12:45 a.m. a block away from his house on 4114 Pine street. “There are a number of cop cars outside our house,” he said at 12:50 a.m. “We haven’t been outside but from what we understand, a number of people have already reported it.”

Multiple people were stopped in the area, but nothing was found, Cella said.

"When you hear reports of gunshots, police are going to go out and do their job," she added.
