2011 State of the Union Drinking Game
Get drunk while getting informed
· January 25, 2011, 7:38 am
President Barack Obama will deliver his annual State of the Union address tonight at 9 p.m. If you’re not already planning on watching it, here’s a reason to tune in.
Whether you’ll be watching at home or at the Penn Dems-College Republicans joint viewing party in Huntsman Hall, this drinking game will be sure to make your experience much more enjoyable.
- Take a shot when Obama says, “We need change.”
- Take a shot when Obama says, “Let me be perfectly clear.”
- Stand up to drink when Obama receives a standing ovation.
- Help a friend finish a drink when Obama mentions bipartisanship.
- Take a shot when Obama says "red” or “blue.” Drunkenly sing our school song if he happens to say “red and blue.”
- If you’re in Wharton, take a shot when Obama contrasts Wall Street from Main Street.
- If you’re in the Nursing School, take a shot when Obama defends healthcare reform.
- If you’re in MEChA, take a shot when Obama defends immigration reform.
- Chase your drink with orange juice whenever you notice John Boehner.
Pick up Wednesday's DP for extensive (sober) coverage of the State of the Union address.

Although I find nothing in particular wrong with this article as an article, this is the wrong publication for it. It really should have been published in Under the Button or 34th St. Only a few words from it are news, and no real opinion is discernible beyond the general mockery of some buzz words.
It's a little sad to see this only a few days after the editorial about the DP trying to set a higher bar for itself for the coming year.

I completely agree with this last post. I think this article could be great in other places -- but here, on the front page of the DP, really? Featuring articles like these undermines the DP's efforts to be taken seriously as an independent, news publication.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say for the first time, in a long time, that the opinion page actually showed an opinion. Several days ago a Penn parent wrote a lengthy letter to the editor criticizing the DP for their non-newsworthy coverage of alcohol, especially on the Opinino page. A similarly length response was posted by a current student - which sparked a nice short discussion between students in the comments section.
One of the arugments that I liked in the discussion was the idea behind zero censorship for the independent newspaper.
I think the fact that this article was authored by "The Daily Pennsylvanian" and not an individual opinion author makes me think that the DP is making a statement about their thoughts about free, independent press.
Assuming that is true - I'm excited for the DP's trust in their reader's to think about what is being published rather than just publishing a dry article about their rights to publish uncensored.

again with the trashiness? this newspaper is supposed to be classy... please leave the fluff pieces to 34th street, underthebutton, etc. just because you have freedom of speech doesn't mean you have to say uncessary and not newspaper-worthy things.

First the beer goggles demystified "column", now this? what's wrong with UTB or 34th st? it's now getting to the point where if another one of these comes out I'd actually start to become embarrassed that this was my reputable school's newspaper.

Seriously? The voter turnout between the ages of 18-24 are the lowest of all the age groups. This age group is even worse when it comes to participating in politics. If it was up to me I would have this on the front page of every news site. What better way to influence this group than to incorporate something that will be in their life as they hit this age. I'm just glad they are watching and if at least one person in the room learned something whether it be big or small, then it seems this newspaper has helped informed the largest and upcoming voters.

I think Penn students would still read real news without being baited by stuff like this. Maybe I over-estimate my peers. Your argument is kind of insulting to Penn students isn't it? I feel like we're a pretty intellectual bunch.
