Cloud calls it quits after 30 years

After 30 years with the program, Penn field hockey coach Val Cloud announced her retirement at the team’s annual banquet on Dec. 13.
Cloud has served Penn’s athletic department well since 1980, coaching 15 years as an assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach before taking the field hockey head-coaching job in 1995. As a head coach she amassed 115 wins and one Ivy League title in 2004.
During her tenure, Cloud produced three National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Americans including Sue Quinn in 1995, Liz Lorelli in 2003, and Lea Salese in 2005 in addition to 16 players that received Mid-Atlantic Region Honors.
Cloud also coached 38 All-Ivy honorees — four of which were unanimously selected — and one Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Melissa Black in 2004.
That same season, the SUNY Brockport alumna led her squad to an Ivy League Championship with an overall record of 13-4 and a 6-1 Ivy League record.
“I will take with me many great memories, and I look forward to staying in touch with the many friendships I have established at Penn throughout the field hockey community,” Cloud said in her parting announcement, according to Pennathletics.com. “I thank my colleagues, players and family for making my 30+ years of coaching so meaningful to me.”
