Police have arrested one male for allegedly attacking a 53-year-old maintenance mechanic during the May 30 flash mob around South Street.
Stephen Lyde, 21, allegedly knocked the victim off his bike, rendering him unconscious with "internal injuries and skull, rib and facial fractures," Capt. Laurence Nodiff told the Philadelphia Daily News.
The victim, who spent a few days on life support, is now in stable condition in the hospital.
The Daily News reported that Lyde was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and related offenses.
The suspect was also charged with aggravated assault and robbery in 2005, although those charges were dismissed.
The May 30 mob, which consisted mostly of teenagers aged 12 to 17 and was organized over cell phones and online social networks, also caused other less severe injuries.
According to The Daily News, "a city employee and a taxi driver incurred minor injuries when they were pulled out of their cars and assaulted."
Teenagers also looted a Sunoco convenience store located at Broad and Catherine Streets, and a woman was robbed and her purse was stolen.
Police have stated a possible connection between the teenagers involved in the May flash mob and recent crowds around 40th and Walnut streets.

This same person robbed me right in the area at 46th and Pine in 2005. Hard to be believe he has been back at it again.

Who are these rioters, these members of the flash mob. NONE of the articles actually mention who these people are other than internet users, and I would like to understand the motivation. Is it gangs of white computer geeks beating up minorities? If so, these are hate crimes and I would like to know more about it so that we can deal harshly with these criminals!

The question is are we prepared to abort hate crimes whoever the perpatrators are, wherever and whenever the crime encounters occur? To be safe and secure under any and all conditions is a responsibility as well as a need of all people in society. Most people want others to be responsible for their safety. When the fight or flight response is elicited by a crime situation we are responsible to have generated a third option in order to be safe and secure under any and all conditions. If the perpatrators are people who project culturally ingrained racism at whoever is different from them, these are hate crimes by all races of people. If you are unprepared sitting ducks for random would-be criminals, then that's on you because it doesn't have to be that way. And sticking our heads in the sand and not looking at our part in what happens to us is unproductive and plain stupid. Police officers being shot and killed leaving grieving families as well as police brutality which results in citizens being shot and killed leaving grieving families are hate crimes. Police officers could be prepared to abort the crimes committed against them and they don't investigate it possibly because they are the people being paid to save us. If they could save themselves then it's a logical conclusion that we could possibly save ourselves also. What kind of job security would that ensure for the millions of people who make a living in the crime prevention field. Remember it's a responsibility to be safe and secure under any and all conditions whether at 46th and Pine or Society Hill's South Street.

Is this a another black on white crime? They haven't caught the gang that attacked Marty Marshall.
