Falling down. Falling down.
South Street Bridge is falling down. My. Fair. Lady.
A rapid deterioration of the already falling apart bridge has caused the structure to crumble into the Schuylkill River.
"How come every time you come around my South Street, South Street Bridge wanna go down?" asked Facilities spokesman Tony Sorrentino.

I hope everyone realizes that according to the Streets Department, the South Street Bridge is regularly inspected and occasionally repaired and that the immediate problem with the Bridge is that concrete may spall off the Bridge - not that the structure is likely to crumble into the Schuylkill River. Remember those nets under the railroad bridge in Manayunk? If there was room under the South Street Bridge, the Streets Department might choose to install the nets rather than needing to occasionally close the Bridge for repairs. I think everyone wants the Bridge rebuilt and the sooner the better. It seems to make little sense to have to repair it so frequently. However, many people including me also believe that the Bridge also needs to be redone in a way that is safe for all transportation modes and a green and friendly connection between University City and Center City. We do not think it should be just a highway bridge. We think we can do better. The choice we make now will be with us for the next seventy five to one hundred years.
