Editorial | Hey Penn, you suck
By trying to stop a harmless chant, Penn is making a mountain out of a molehill

There's a fine line between sportsmanship and oversensitivity.
It's called common sense.
Unfortunately, the Athletic department crossed that line when it decided to stop The Penn Band from playing the popular "Hey Song."
Officially titled "Rock and Roll Part 2," the song is a mainstay at Penn men's basketball games.
Late in the game, when it seems that the Quakers will win, the Band plays the song and fans replace the traditional "Hey!" refrain with "Hey, you suck!"
Athletic administrators argue that the song has elicited many complaints from alumni who bring younger children to the games.
While the phrase isn't the classiest of retorts, "you suck" ranks fairly low on the obscenity scale.
It's perfectly fine, of course, for school officials to insist on a certain level of conduct at games. Students shouting profanities or racist comments would certainly merit swift intervention by the Athletic department.
But the chant in question doesn't include any personal attacks or highly offensive phrases. It doesn't even single out any of the opposing players.
Instead, it fires up the fans, engages the crowd and captures the competitive spirit of the game.
So let the fans chant. And let the Band play on.

What ever happened to good sportmanship? Taunting the opposition, whether it is an individual or the entire team, is never acceptable.

When I was at Penn, and we sang "Hang Jeff Davis" at football games, we always substituted "F--- You!" for "Giddyup". Most students, including myself, thought it was funny and thought the alumni who complained were just a bunch of stuffed shirts. What I realized after Penn, was that it is really beneath us as human beings to speak such language, especially human beings who claim to represent an "upper echelon" of intelligence in society. If, as Ivy Leaguers, we are so elite, then let's set an example for the rest of our society by behaving in an exemplary manner. If we want to be real leaders, then let's lead in all areas of life, not just in the workplace and the financial arenas. Let's be moral leaders, intellectual leaders, leaders of families, etc. Real leaders don't scream out "F--- You" or "You Suck" at a sporting event. Let's elevate ourselves, not debase ourselves. Remember, that as Ivy Leaguers, people look up to us as leaders, so let's lead.

How can they ban a silly song as long as access to "juicycampus.com" is available. I am digusted and ashamed by the Penn community's participation in that stupid website, and it's FAR more hurtful and demeaning than saying "you suck" at a basketball game... Where are Penn admin's heads?

Chanting 'you suck' to student athletes, while being a fan, is just plain stupid. After all, I don't any fans suiting up, working hard, and contributing to the effort. Until then, just cheer for your team, and keep your comments for someone who does not suck compared to you.

The fact that the chant is dumb has absolutely nothing to do with whether students should be allowed to continue with it. All of these comments focusing on the chant itself and not the issue at hand (censoring students) is a little embarrassing.

Yes, "you suck" is on the low end of humor.. I much prefer "LEFT, RIGHT,...." and its new addition of "hug, hug, hug" and "Standing..standing" that was voiced last week against Yale. However, as a member of the "Go Stan Greene" generation, the administration should lighten up. Let the chant run its course - trust your students - they are bright people - they will find something better. Offer up a trade -- bring back streamers in lieu of "you suck" Of course - during the Penn/Cornell football game last fall - I think the student section kept up the "you suck" cheer for better than 20 minutes...and it was accurate.. Cornell was worse than my GPA...(it sucked too)

The way it's going this year, change "suck" to "won" in the chant, and everything's OK.

The Hey Song is great because of the energy it creates for the fans. But why does saying "you suck" need to be a part of that at all? I mean seriously, if everyone switched over to "Go Penn", we still get R&R; Part II, sound like classier fans, and its not offensive to anyone. How hard would it be for the R&B; Crew to start doing that instead? Moot point for now, I guess, since the only other home games this semester are over spring break.

Penn spectators--the vocal ones--are an embarrassment. It's bad enough that they have no understanding of sports, so that when they do call out something it underscores what morons we are. But then they compound it by having cheers that are vulgar, but even worse, are witless. Penn spectators make us sound like ninnies, blatherers, dork wannabes. Surely Penn students are capable of verbal play (the other Ivies seem to be, as do the state schools). Surely there could be some sign of intelligent life at the games. "You suck" is indeed as good as it gets at Penn. When is it as bad as it gets? When we come off like runny-nosed, know-nothing, driveling little privileged princes and princesses, shouting, "We employ your moms and dads" to Temple students. I have been so revolted by Penn's behavior at games that I have stopped attending them, and would never lower Penn's reputation by bringing any non-Penn guests, much less children. The Penn band is an embarrassment when it plays that song. What's perhaps not so amazing is that Sixers, and Flyers, and Phillies fans (yes, the ones your mommies and daddies employ) say funnier, smarter, and more knowledgeable things than Penn students. That's what a Penn education does for you, I guess. Advice: learn a little something about sports, attend some games and watch how people who know about sports act, maybe do your homework and read some books, and then try revising your idiotic songs and cheers. Look around you: get some perspective on yourselves. Your behavior is pathetic. Three cheers to whoever is trying to rehabilitate this particular Penn branch of idiocracy.
