CHEERS
To the city of Philadelphia, for rejecting pay-to-play party politics by electing policy wonk and reformer Michael Nutter.
To Huntsman senior Joyce Meng and Penn alum Stephen Danley for winning the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships.
To athletic director Steve Bilsky, for ensuring that the eastward expansion plan improves Penn's athletic facilities through additional construction and building upgrades.
To the administration, for a successful quiet phase of the capital campaign that raised $1.6 billion.
To the University, for holding exciting capital campaign kick-off events that impressed alumni and current students alike.
To the Penn Environmental Group, for its extensive work this semester in improving recycling off-campus.
To Counseling and Psychological Services, for meeting increased student demand by hiring eight additional staff members and recognizing the need for experts in certain mental health areas.
To the Muslim Students Association and the College Republicans, for working out a compromise over the conflict between Islamofascism Week and Islam Awareness week. Their efforts prevented ugly clashes between student groups, which occurred on other campuses, from happening here.
To Women's Soccer, for winning the Ivy League Title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
JEERS
To the administration, for their handling of the Stetson resignation. Their cover-up not only undermined the University's reputation, but also revealed the insincerity of its supposed dedication to honesty and openness with students.
To the University, for losing the Democratic Primary debate to Drexel because of its lackluster efforts to accommodate media and party officials.
To the Undergraduate Assembly, for holding and condoning a superficial freshman election that emphasized style over substance.
To Student Health Services, for deciding not to cover the human papillomavirus vaccine under the University's insurance plan.
To Facilities, for failing to provide more affordable off-campus housing options. Apartments like Radian have rents that are simply too high for many Penn students.
To PECO, for their negligence in addressing outdated wiring and electrical equipment, which led to multiple power outages and fires around campus.
To President Gutmann, who broke tradition by not dressing up at her Halloween party this year.
To the University, for failing to help the College Republicans pay for an on-campus venue for presidential candidate John McCain's visit to Penn.
To SEPTA, for raising fares again this year by an additional 15 cents.

Jeers: to the 18-24 year old African-American, West Philly natives who continue to terrorize the city & our campus by robbing, murdering, and assaulting on a regular basis. Cheers: to the Penn & Philly Police, who put their lives @ risk to make us safe, and are occasionally lucky enough to blow some of these bastards away.

Sure I try just as hard as she does in making the school safer by sitting on my ass all day and making stupid statements in public about not being able to improve the safety around Penn.

¥ "To the University, for losing the Democratic Primary debate to Drexel because of its lackluster efforts to accommodate media and party officials." It was a cost-benefit decision, it had nothing to do with a lack of effort. It had to do with the costs associated.

¥ To Student Health Services, for deciding not to cover the human papillomavirus vaccine under the University's insurance plan. ¥ To Facilities, for failing to provide more affordable off-campus housing options. Apartments like Radian have rents that are simply too high for many Penn students. I'm an enlightened college student. I don't believe in capitalism or personal responsibility. I was always taught by my parents, unionized teachers, and hippie professors that if you really wish and hope hard enough, two plus two can make whatever you want, thereby allowing the economics of socialist medicine and collectivized housing to work, instead of failing invariably as they did in Soviet Russia, Castro's Cuba, and Mugabe's Zimbabwe. Michael Moore rocks!

I'm still very upset at the rate at which we are losing big name Professors. Though it is true that we have gained some great Professors, we need to double the size of our Philosophy Department. We have great people, but it's a small department. But Penn is a great, regardless.

Michael Moore rocks![/QUOTE] First, sarcasm noted. Second, thank you for reducing a complex argument of health care into a simple mantra of "markets work" and comparing any effort to socialize medicine to Soviet Russia, Cuba, and Zimbabwe. Clearly, those are the ONLY relevant comparisons to make? Believing that covering HPV is a responsibility of student health or hoping that the University will help provide more affordable housing are not necessarily the product of "hippies" or "unions" or fuzzy math. Given that the University aims to attract at least some people of lower income levels AND does not have the housing for all, it does not seem unreasonable to think that affordable housing is a worth cause for the school. You might not think that attracting candidates from various income levels should be the university's business, but given that it is (at least as I've heard) such a request does not seem out of line. Second, there may be reasons to believe that a health campus is a happy campus, even if one individual does not feel the need to get vaccinated him/herself (depending on the vaccination). Given that I do not see a whole lot of choice in the health insurance market (not to mention the problem of asymmetric information in such a market), I don't find it unreasonable to think that this might be the in the realm of the university's interest. Does it necessarily mean that it is, of course not. However, to throw out your buzzwords (choose from Michael Moore, Soviets, extreme leftist, Cuba, communism, ...) simply to make your point both reduces the discourse and, quite frankly, makes you look stupid. And yes, when others throw out buzzwords like Nazi, etc., that reduces the discourse as well. Please say something intelligent, funny, or entertaining, or nothing at all.

You guys have to stop putting Rush down. She and her retired buddies from the PPD did a great job in reducing crime in the city. They deserve the chance to make Penn look just like the rest of Philly.
