Penn President Amy Gutmann raked in $777,692 in total compensation in 2005-06, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education's annual survey released yesterday.

The total placed Gutmann second among Ivy League leaders, only trailing Yale University's Richard Levin, who earned $869,026.

Twelve presidents earned $1 million or more, though only three continue to lead their universities. Richard Freeland, who left Northeastern University in August 2006, led the nation with a total compensation of $2,887,775. James Gallagher, formerly of Philadelphia University, came in second with $2,557,219 in total compensation.

The survey also noted the general trend of university executives' salaries. Among private institutions, the median compensation of leaders of research institutions rose 37 percent in the last five years, to $528,105. Salaries for presidents of Master's and baccalaureate institutions also rose considerably over the same time period.

Gutmann made $630,000 in salary and $147,692 in benefits, according to the survey.
