News Brief: Barbaro recovering after removal of cast
· November 15, 2006, 5:00 am
Kentucky Derby-winner Barbaro is resting comfortably in the intensive-care unit of Penn's New Bolton Center after having the cast removed from his right leg on Nov. 6.
Barbaro - a thoroughbred racehorse who fractured his leg severely during the Preakness in May - has defied the odds over the courses of his arduous recovery.
Barbaro was given only a 5-percent chance of surviving after he developed life-threatening acute laminitis in his left hind foot in July.
While his condition is now stabilized, his injury ended his racing career. He could still have a future as a breeding horse, though.
Since Barbaro was admitted to the University's facility outside Philadelphia for treatment, he has garnered much national exposure and publicity that has swamped the New Bolton Center's staff.
