Harvard has announced that members of unrecognized, single-gender organizations will be ineligible for campus leadership positions in recognized organizations, athletic team captaincy and top fellowship endorsement, starting with the Class of 2021.
In an email sent to Harvard undergraduates, Harvard University President Drew G. Faust announced the sanctions, which come after recommendations from Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana and from a university-wide report on sexual assault prevention.
“Although the fraternities, sororities, and final clubs are not formally recognized by the College, they play an unmistakable and growing role in student life, in many cases enacting forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values,” Faust, a 1975 doctoral graduate from Penn's School of Arts & Sciences, said in her email.
According to The Harvard Crimson's article on the sanctions, groups affected by the sanctions include members of single-gender final clubs and unrecognized fraternities and sororities. About six percent of undergraduates are members of sororities.
