Wildcats gone too wild?
Villanova students rushed Lancaster Avenue to celebrate their basketball team's NCAA victory under heavy police supervision.
The celebration of the Villanova Wildcat’s win over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA Championship game got particularly rowdy. Eight participants were arrested and 25 were injured. Five people were hospitalized, mostly due to fractures.
During the revelries, a bush torn from a flowerbed was lit on fire, as well as trees, a sofa and toilet paper. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a police horse was assaulted, leading to two of the arrests.
However, most of the celebrations following the basketball game were peaceful and did not require intervention from police or Villanova faculty. Around 2:30 a.m., the police loaded on to a SEPTA bus and left. According to NBC News, the President of Villanova University, Peter Donohue, urged the partiers to remain peaceful and safe.
In the early morning after the game, Villanova University sent out an alert canceling all classes for the day.
