Brown University students took to their campus’ main green on Saturday to voice their opinions on the numerous incidents of sexual assault that occur on college campuses across the country.
The event was part of a Stand Up! sponsored march and was followed by a keynote address by Sandra Kim, the founder of Everyday Feminism.
As part of this march, students were heard chanting slogans such as "respect, equality, that's the way it's gotta be" and "yes means yes, no means no, however we dress, wherever we go," according to The Brown Daily Herald.
During the march, students stopped at various iconic landmarks on campus, such as University Hall. According to Stand Up! founder Emily Schell, this was a way to "rest and reflect."
"People who have been at Brown a little while know that there's a lot of meaning in this," Schell added.
In her keynote address, Kim, a trained sexual assault survivor advocate herself, focussed on several facets and misconceptions regarding the issue of sexual assault on campus that prevail in colleges and society at large.
In order to combat the pervasive tendency of this issue, Kim said, "We need to really proactively create an environment where survivors feel like they'll be believed and supported."
