In the wake of several student suicides and an investigation of Penn's mental health resources, a Penn student's struggle with depression has been brought to a national spotlight.
Kathryn DeWitt, now a rising College sophomore, felt intimidated by the seemingly perfect lives of her peers when she first arrived at Penn. Her first months on campus were complicated by a difficult class and the challenge of accepting her sexuality, and although she appeared to have it all together on the outside, her inner confidence began to waver.
After Madison Holleran's death in January of 2014, DeWitt began contemplating suicide herself. When her roommate found a stack of goodbye letters, DeWitt received counseling and was hospitalized. She took a leave of absence from Penn and completed an internship at Active Minds, a mental health advocacy group.
Now, DeWitt is comfortable sharing her story. She has joined new groups on campus that allow her to comfortably talk about her experience, and her new path — while less certain than before — is one she is happier about pursuing.
