Following the hospitalization of 12 people at Wesleyan University last weekend, the school's enforcement policies regarding the use of drugs is being called into question.
Like many other schools, Wesleyan prevents the "unlawful use and distribution of illicit drugs," but the regulation of drug use and subsequent enforcement are complicated by the school's treatment of drug abuse primarily as a health issue and mixed attitudes toward certain drugs.
In 2011, the school referred 154 students for disciplinary action on drug-based violations. In 2013, it referred 240.
Wesleyan President Michael Roth explained that he does not expect significant changes to be made to the school's drug policies he believes have thus far been successful in "trying to point students toward making responsible choices, not overly policing them, while at the same time putting up pretty clear guardrails."
