No arrests have been made as of Thursday afternoon for the armed robbery in RadioShack on Wednesday night, according to Philadelphia Police Public Affairs Office.
Around 10 p.m. Wednesday night, the Division of Public Safety received a radio call that the store, located on 212 S. 40th Street, had been robbed at gunpoint by three suspects. A UPenn Alert was sent out at 10:04 p.m. informing the community of increased police activity, and again at 10:33 p.m when the area was clear.
Around 9:30 p.m., a RadioShack employee was forced into the bathroom and hit over the head according to a complaint. The employee was then forced to open the register and merchandise cage. The suspects made off with unknown merchandise as well as the employee's phone and wallet.
The suspects were last seen heading west bound on Locust Street, Rush said Wednesday night. Philadelphia and Penn Police officers interviewed RadioShack employees for more information.
The suspects are described as in their mid-20s. One is a muscular, possibly Hispanic man, approximately 5’11” in blue jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt, and two are black men in their mid-20s, one approximately 6’2” in blue jeans and grey hooded sweatshirt and the other about 5’8” to 5’9” in black jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt.
Although it was a retail theft, DPS sent out the initial alert to inform the Penn community to be cautious, Rush said. The second alert, saying that people could resume business as usual, was sent out when police believed the suspects were “way out of the area,” she added. As of Wednesday night, extra security was set up in the area as a precaution and to make people feel safe.
