Graduating senior tight end Luke Nawrocki is barely going to make his commencement ceremony on Monday morning.
This weekend, Nawrocki is in San Francisco playing at the 49ers rookie mini-camp. He’ll take a red-eye flight home Sunday night in order to walk in the graduation festivities Monday morning at his second home for the past four years, Franklin Field.
Nawrocki isn’t the only Penn senior still chasing his dreams. Linebacker Erik Rask was invited to the Jacksonville Jaguars rookie mini-camp the night the NFL Draft concluded. He attended as an undrafted free agent with 26 other free agents, a mix of rookies and veterans.
On Tuesday, the Jaguars announced they had signed seven of those 27 free agents and released an additional six. Rask was in neither group, and the Jaguars are currently at the NFL-limit of 90 players.
Offensive lineman Greg Van Roten also received invitations from pro teams. May 4, he heard from the New York Jets and the San Diego Chargers. He attended the Jets mini-camp last weekend and is in San Diego this weekend.
Nawrocki described the camps, which have been limited by the new CBA, as similar to a Penn preseason practice. The practices are in just helmets, and consist of two short, intense 90-minute practices per day.
