Although a new University logo was accepted several years ago, only now are the vestiges of the old logo starting to disappear from campus.
The new University logo, which is the word 'Penn' next to the school shield, replaced the old logo, which was just the word 'PENN,' in an attempt to modernize its appearance.
"The phasing out [of the old logo] is complete," said Director of Marketing for Business Services Sharlene Sones, "although you may still see inventory from previous orders in the Bookstore."
According to Director of Communications and Special Projects for Business Services Rhea Lewis, the new logo was implemented after intensive surveys of students, faculty and alumni.
"A lot of work was put into developing the new logo," said Lewis.
University spokeswoman Lori Doyle said that the new logo was created in an effort to tie together design elements of the emblems of the various schools and create one unifying configuration.
The old logo did not immediately disappear on campus.
"We didn't want to suddenly get rid of the old logo. We wanted to phase it out," Doyle said.
Lewis added that as soon as the remaining supply of apparel with the old logo on it is sold, only merchandise with the new logo will be available for purchase.
A more recent change in logos on campus involves the athletic logo. The "split P" that is used for all athletic teams was updated in 2004. The modernization of this logo was done to "give the athletic department something unique," Sones said.
Students have shown a mixed reaction to the departure of the old Penn logo.
"I didn't even know there was an old and new logo," College sophomore Daniel Glass said. "I'm not that heartbroken about losing the old one."
However, some students, like College junior Sally Dreibelbis, are more disappointed about the phasing out of the old logo.
"For apparel, I definitely prefer the older logo," Dreibelbis said.
